There's no conjugation of verbs, there's no past and future tense on verbs. (you just use a word such as "le" at the end of the sentence to render the entire sentence past tense)
Characters aren't really that hard when you're typing on a PC. I use pinyin input so I just type the pinyin in and the characters for that pinyin are displayed in a box and I just select the correct character. The software is smart enough to know the context you are using the word in so the correct character will often be the first. You can even type the entire sentence in pinyin.
