Is this the correct sequence for serving ale on medieval inns?

1. Get ale on barrel with a flagon
2. Serve flagon on table
3. People then put ale from served flagon on their tankards
4. Drink and enjoy.

I'm particulary interested in flagon- its purpose/role in medieval inns

it was mearly just to hold the ale since taverns didn't always have tankards and locals would often bring there own from home, still in an inn the flagon didn't make much sense since a inn would ussualy stock tankards or something like a tankard for drinking.

Buying a flagon would be like buying a round of beers. Today, people buy buckets of bottled or canned beer, we also have the technology to do this. A flagon is supposed to be an amount of beer to sate a party instead of one or two individuals. Tankards, being metal cups with handles, would be filled from the flagon or at the bar and sold on a first come first served basis and would be refilled accordingly throughout the day.
Alternatively, during busier hours, flagons would be used to refill patron's beers on the fly. It's literally a beer pitcher.
A more interesting beer container is the beer stein, the mugs with the flip-top lids. They aren't to prevent spilling, they are to prevent bugs from landing in your beer. Truly a thinking man's beer mug.

I read that people bring flagons for takeout. Is this always the case? Any other purpose for it?

So people directly get ale from barrel with their tankards?

Also is their a case where people directly drink from a flagon?

at a tavern, it was common for the brewer to sell 1 or 2-gallon flagon's since they catered to a local community. I picture yes at a tavern people would drink straight from a flagon and what they didn't drink they'd take home.

Inn's on the other hand, catered almost exclusively to travellers, and they would usually serve you a tankard filled from a barrel, so you weren't likely to be able to get a flagon at an inn.

Another question though, is it wierd if a tavern didnt have flagons but instead like inn, refills tankard from barrel?

Also,if i understand it correctly, if a party of four is drinking on a tavern that has tankards, they can order 1 or 2 flagons (if they didnt bring any) for them to share, but if the tavern didnt have tankards they will be forced to order four. Is this correct?

It wasn't strange for a tavern not to provide flagons but it was much more common for them to do so since they often brewed the ale on-site. in a larger town, they might not have supplied them and you would buy ale similar to how you would buy it in an inn, but it was the norm the for the majority of tavern to stock flagons

as for your second question. people could order as many flagons as they could carry, the tavernkeeper didn't care so long as he made money, they'd just have to pay for the flagons that the ale will be carried in.

If i understand it correctly, your post seem to imply that they actually use the flagon as fermenting container? Is this correct? I really thought they just get the ale from barrels and put it on standby, ready to be sold.

no, it's often used to age and carbonated ale, when working on a smaller scale, but you can still age in barrels too, tavern would use both methods.

Haha. I really thought when you store the ale, fermentation still happens throughout its storage hence the term. I need to look at this closely. I had zero experience with this, so i am really thankful for your patience answering my dumb questions.

I think from here on out, i can research independently. my questions are really detailed i cant get meaningful results when searching (or might be using the wrong term).
