Watching Notre Dame burn today truly hit me on a gut level. What a symbolic event and example of the modern state of things. Seeing the spire overcome by flame and collapse was strangely painful for me. It represented both the modern fall of Western Christian culture, and also the survival of the most core aspects nonetheless. The stone remains. The dead wood has burned away.
