But if they are forced to stay in a facility and have nothing better to do then might as well do some work for a reduced sentence or money paid after getting out. Unless the prisoner is physically unable to do anything of course.

It gives the government and police a financial motivation to imprison as many people as possible for as long as possible. In addition to our fucked up plea bargain system, it's why the US has more prisoners and prisoners per capita than any other nation.

People think the US is a bastion for free speech because "hate speech" is technically legal. In practice the line is blurry between "hate speech" and illegal things like disorderly conduct, harassment, public mischief, libel, intimidation, hate crimes, etc.

Canada allows things like Holocaust denial which automatically makes them better about free speech than most non-American countries.
