Still mostly only the sages of a community kept the the traditions and shared it with every single member, so there were many of the common folk who only grasped a bit of everything and questioned oneself.
Those were easily persuade to join Christianity, they found answers, because they were told to them to be fact, everyone who behaved after the new rules will find true happiness. The stories of Jesus and his powers astonished them, they supposedly happened for real in our world in the past, he was acclaimed as god of the people, the only god of them all who showed his physical appearance to man.
The others went over the centuries into oblivion and Jesus was known as the only true God.
Fake promises and exploiting of once worries were and are still the model of Christianity.
