The traditional slave states rejected the Constitution, period. They believed that the Articles of Confederation were the proper law of the land, meaning they could always opt out if they disagreed with other states, but retain trade relations. It was like the first Brexit, and ended about as well for the South. They found that the people in charge wanted to be in charge of everything, or there would be no real trade. It's been that way ever since, and the EU has found that out as well.
For me, the period from the Revolution until the Constitution replaced the A of C was the greatest example of a democracy the world had seen since ancient Greece.
