macedonians are a regional subgroup of bulgarians who got split off from the main branch when we got liberated from ottoman rule. we spend the next 70 years (1878-1945) trying to incorporate them (and others, such as the slavophones in greece) back through various wars but we failed. in the end they got brainwashed by the comintern and yugoslavia into thinking they're a separate people because their name sounds vaguely greek and they put the accents on different parts of the words
the internal macedonian revolutionary organisation was an organisation from the 19th century that at first wanted to start a rebellion to kick the ottomans out of macedonia, and then when bulgaria was actually established, to join the macedonian province to bulgaria. at first they were rebels, then they fought as volunteers in the balkan wars and ww1 in favor of bulgaria.
so you see, in their case, macedonia just refers to the name of the region, not an ethnic group. another thing that's worth mentioning is that the term "macedonian" also refers to some peoples in the bulgarian southwest that did become part of bulgaria, such as people from blagoevgrad and goce delchev. they're called "macedonian" because they're just born in the macedonian region of bulgaria, that's it. just like how people from my home region are called dobrujans
so to bring it back to current times, the current party called internal macedonian revolutionary organisation is just a reference to that organisation and they started out in southwestern bulgaria. they're basically patriotards and i wouldn't vote to give them political power in bulgaria but i'd love to send them to the european parliament to shit things up.
and the current macedonian state is just a bunch of bulgarians brainwashed into thinking they wuz kangz and they wuz opressed by the actual bulgaria.
