In America, the mob use to act a lot like the cartels. If someone pissed them off, they'd kill them and their entire family. They've learned since then that doing that in America is a poor idea, as even the most hobbled old woman is capable of getting a gun and ending your life, often with the cops just writing it off as another instance of gang-related violence.
