The woods in Maine are really dense and the people have a habit of keeping to themselves and not asking questions, so even though he lived less than 2 miles away from inhabited areas, he was completely secluded from the outside world. People in the area knew him as "the North Pond Hermit" and even today he's an urban legend. The summers are very favorable so all he had to do was use that time to prepare for the winters. He made his way by stealing petty stuff (which is how people knew he even existed) because he was too scared to make a fire, hunt, farm, or fish, but if you were able to conceal your fires, etc. you could live just like he did, except that you would never get caught.
