Maybe some do (Win 8 started to I believe?) but generally the assumption is "the user knows what's best for the user."

Apple knows what's best for you, because apple knows you're dumb. They're "geniuses" and can tell you what to do: Give them your money so it can be properly horded in off-shore accounts.

Well, only 6.5 gb are in use and it has a full OS and all the applications I regularly use including a bunch of additional stuff like blender, compilers, IDEs and various other tools (audio, image editing, etc)

For data I use additional disks which can be had for about $40 per TB.
