Why do nations put almost all of their countries resources into the major cities instead of spreading them out across the whole nation?

For the UK, London is the most powerful city and where most of the nations wealth is pushed into. Same for the USA and California, Silicon Valley is an insane treasure trove in one small location and the united states government has allowed them all to pool in one small spot.

These major cities have very little in common with the rest of the nations, they are politically opposed to the rest of the population and they are the least patriotic.

There could very well come a time in the not to distant future where these cities demand to secede from the rest of the nation or start withholding resources and there would be little the nations could do about it outside of some kind of civil war.

To use an analogy, it's like putting all your savings and deeds into your wifes name and you're always arguing for the past 10 years. She already doesn't like you and if she leaves you, she is taking almost everything.
