How is it possible for a western person who has gone through basic education to be a christian, or even otherwise religious? I don't get it.

it is more than what it says on paper there's family and community elements leading to feelings of belonging and peer pressure to conform to their belief systems

there's also not really a down side to it and calling it out would get you excluded

that said i wish it wasn't christianity because its just basically jewish slave religion

i don't believe in any of it but a priest saying the deceased no longer suffer and go somewhere nice is a really nice thing to hear

Humanity needs a religion, it’s in our genetics. Without religion, we are degenerates and we will create a pseudo-religion anyways through the belief of nothing. Look at Atheism today. It is a religion in itself with leaders and prophets and holy books and worship places and their own special clothing and everything. Atheists are indeed part of their own religion, it took making fun of them with the fedora-topping meme to show it.

by "pseudo-religion" I think you mean culture
you're right by saying people will always form culture/communities and that's not a bad thing however
why do we *need* to believe in anything
community is necessary we're social creatures but we don't need some made up beliefs to hold onto morals or keep us united
and not to mention any of the atrocities that have been committed using religion to manipulate believers (crusades, jihads, terror attacks in general, ect.)
my point being that religion is unnecessary at best and a tool of manipulation at worst
