Compared to ancient greek, the language is very watered down, and most tonals (which is in my opinion the hardest part for a foreigner) have dissapeared.
So you might as well go straight for the deep end and not waste your time.
Of course, I'm no expert.
All I know is it was mandatory for us to learn some ancient greek, and our prior knowledge was almost useless, except for some common words.
There is a middle ground between the two, a scholarly tongue called kαθαρεύουσα (kath-are-eh-voo-sah), used after the Byzantine times.
If you really wanna try something easier first, maybe go for that one? Many improtant books from this period util even the early 1900s have been written in that, I believe, and a whole lot of Orthodox texts used in churches even today, so there's definetly gonna be reading material.
Doubl check EVERYTHING you just read, last time I bothered with that I was in highschool, and I spent my class time learning pen tricks.
