That is the irrational ponzi-scheme part.
The idea that the detriments of endless population growth are less then the detriments of losing the capitalist ponzi-scheme method of caring for the elderly.
The Japanese must accept putting the health and survival of their people and society over fat pensions, fancy pants and lollipops for the elderly.
They also must invest in finding new methods to help care for the elderly more efficiently with less money and that don't rely on population growth.
Automation can help but its not far enough along yet.
I am sure the elderly Japanese would prefer to be pushed out to sea then to see their country slowly devolve into the identity-less, corrupt, endlessly divided and malfunctioning open-bordered capitalist markets of the Western world.
