This is an exaggeration. Still plenty of popular music with a focus on melody. Also, even if music with a lack of strong melody in the last 15 years is happening, is that really a big deal? Western music has a long, rich history. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, etc. all mastered their specialties. Who the hell is going to write a better fugue than Bach? Artists are just trying to find new ways to express themselves, and there's not a lot of unexplored areas. The greats will always be there, new music doesn't take away from them.
All that said, the decline of classical music appreciation is a bigger concern to me. There's arguably more classical musicians than at any point in history, yet orchestras are losing funding and experiencing cutbacks. The result is a shitload of musicians who can't find work because the competition for limited spots is insane. Something's gotta give.
