It's super easy to join ours, we're one of the best paid in the world, receive oodles of training per man, and the equipment any one guy carries is not that much different from what they use in the US. Our service rifle is the same, our sight is only slightly different but you can get a subsidized Aimpoint or Trijicon if you want, and the only really laughable equipment in our force is stuff you'll never even see in person as an Army mans, let alone an Infantry Officer (and is even then still quite modern)
Also, the budget is bigger than ever. Blah blah cuts -- they're slashing the F35, that's it. We're still getting new ships, got new tanks recently, have marginally better rifles than the yankees (ours are basically winterized M4s/M16s except instead of Semi and Burst we just have Semi and Auto) and training/personnel/recruiting budgets are massive so there's always work, even if it's not in Afghanistan.
What I'd recommend for you is joining the Reserves now as an NCM, then once your school is done (and paid for by the Reserves) transfer to officer-dom. I know a few people who have done that or plan to.
Join now though because they're getting rid of Basic for Reservists, it's real weekend warrior shit. It's not as cool as real basic and probably people who were in before this year (like me) will laugh at you for it but other than that all the training you get is identical between Reserve and Regular Force. So is your eligibility for going on operations, I'm Navy but many of my coworkers, including some junior to me, have gone on actual 3/6 month deployments doing anti-piracy or whatever.
