i'm sure that vanilla was a magical time for a lot of people but i think a lot of it had to do with different context. smaller community, less information readily available, lots of wacky stuff that never got properly "solved."
a re-release doesn't shrink the community to the original size, take away wowhead, or stop people who have now poured hundreds or thousands of hours into the game and play professionally from being able to find perfect builds and rotations.
surely there will be people who really do prefer the slower gameplay, longer grind, and janky mechanics, but i think it'll be a much smaller section of people than those who think they will.
similarly i think retail wow is fine. there's some pretty questionable stuff here and there, but i really do think the difference mostly comes down to the fact that people are now playing with crowdsourced perfect information so there's not really as much pioneering or mystery, which isn't really something blizzard can do a lot about.
