i've gotten looks and been told i'm cute times before, but any time i try those apps - if i do get a match - other than slight small talk, nothing ever picks up at all. it's so forced

Yeah most girls on those apps just want confirmation that they look good, they want matches but nothing more. That's why most conversations will just die down.
Some actually want to meet though, I found a few girls there. Found my current gf at uni though, I guess still studying has its perks that way.
