well to be completely honest i don't care about a bunch of rich chinks getting rekt but as far as i know, october 2019 marks the 80 or 70 or something year anniversary of the chinese communist party taking power or being founded or whatever. so they've got a lot of celebrations planned and they don't want the hong kong protests raining on their parade so they're probably trying to shut them down before then. i expect things will get worse as september goes on.
