Roman paganism was so fucked up by the time you get into late empire (emperors making their gay lovers official gods and shit) that it no longer served any purpose. Christianity was popular at the time and the Romans made so many incompetent attempts to repress it that it became the new cool thing.
Islam is in the same exact spot as Christianity right now.
