I figure that any AI overlords will keep humans alive and happy for a long time. Humans are so dependent on technology once we have it, so there'd be little risk of a major uprising against them, but there is the possibility that some large scale natural event that hits technology worse than organic beings could hit the Earth. As such, it'd be rational for the AI to keep some intelligent meatbags around as backup to restore things to proper condition in the event shit hits the fan.
