found out about 40k via the dawn of war games, like you, but something about the world grabbed me and made me look it up online. after reading the wiki i got the itch to read the novels. read dozens of them.
at the time, e-readers weren't a thing and i hated reading from a pc screen, but thankfully my dad worked at a local bank as a sysadmin so he had access to an old printer where he would print the books for me on old copy paper. what a retarded child i was, getting radicalized by fiction novels at the age of 15. thankfully nobody noticed since people here are racist by default.
is 40k an actual scene over there? i'm sure you guys can afford it at least, but is it any popular?
