The reason the MC's become romantically entangled is after a long drawn out dance of seeing each other in the opposite way of how they initially viewed the other. MC1 thought MC2 would be an IRL man whore which he wasn't and the complex internal struggle of not seeing MC2 as what he once thought he was is what propels the romantic overtones. MC1 is great because he actually tells MC2 what he's struggling with in a real way. Their relationship is built around reality instead of a fantastic ideal.
