But all blue collar industries suffer from a serious problem of doing things a certain way because that’s the way it’s always been done. It’s true that a site built, stick frame house is cheap and fast, but pre-fab is aktchually cheaper, faster, and better built. How long did it take for PEX to catch on? Longer lasting, faster and easier to install, and cheaper, but it’s still not being used in some places.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with a wood framed house. Maybe you’ll luck out and it won’t be destroyed by termites. My grandparents home in New Orleans was built in 1905. Wood framed and never flooded, and no serious termite damage. But it’s a roll of the dice.
My wife and I converted a McMansion to a 3-plex a few years ago. That’s what happens to those structures when the boomer owners decide to live in an RV or move. Anyway we sold it recently because we’re worried about it’s durability as a long-term investment. It was built in 2007 but already shows problems; tile popping up or breaking, cabinets and doors that straight up won’t close, drywall seams cracking... the Mexicans living in it were bad enough.
