That way they'll have to swing their katanas all the way to slice their opponent, wasting time and energy and telegraphing their attack quite a lot, not to mention they're wide open against any attack. Considering the distance between them, they'd likely hit with the part of the sword that's closest to the hilt (and worse at cutting) or the tsuba. It would be infinitely better to keep their swords forward in a longpoint, or at least any stance that allows them to react quickly.
