It's messy, since armenians from Syria and Iran are technically Eastern Armenians as well but they don't have the sovietic influence on them.
to put it simply, we were under Russian control while western armenians - under tottoman one, until they flew their homes during WW1, mostly to Europe and America. So they are more westernized and their language is closer to the original armenian, they usually live in western countries for generations and are quite assimilated, while we are more russified and our language has lots of russian loanwords.
There are quite some differences but that's the very basics heh
