You push your body to the limit and you perform at that limit as long as you can, basically its gaining speed(maximum effort) for 3-4 seconds than maintaing it until your legs give up(usually around 10 seconds more) than you rest and do it again and do that couple of times.
Also if you're already underweight cardio like jogging/walking won't do shit.
