mindgames, it eats people to grow but alters perception with some kind of song, nobody notices the singing but it makes them unable to detect the thing at all and they begin to rationalize disappearances as normal by filling in the mental gaps with whatever they think makes sense. they only know something's wrong when there is no singing, which is when its eating someone.
eventually it'll destroy an entire town unless by some miracle someone works out the thing is there and manages to block out the singing
