There is a lot of beauty and doctrinal subtlety contained in the angelic order and in the contemplation of the lives of saints. Moreover there should not be seen anything wrong with asking dead saints or the mother of God to pray for you, nor should there be a problem in accurately praising them for their virtues.

There is an Old Testament account of Saul looking for a medium, the Witch of Endor. It turns out that God indeed brought back the Prophet Samuel, in fact much unexpected by the medium, and even by Saul. Samuel was displeased with having to be brought back down to the Earth in order that he may be used as an example to demonstrate the greater point; we must not attempt to communicate with the dead, and they do not listen, for their do not hear us. The dead are unaware of prayers directed to them, and they would much rather people pray to the everlasting, living God instead of the dead. The angels likewise want prayer to God, not them, nor worship of them, but only God.

It is true that all worship must be directed to God alone. This is the point of Christian monotheism. Yet what is directed toward the Saints or angels does not constitute worship.
However Saul's use of the medium was witchcraft, occult, black magic, and was wrong for this reason. Even further, the medium event took place before the permanent justification of human souls took place by the shedding of Christ's blood on the cross; it should therefore be seen as of a fundamentally different character even than an equivalent act in the modern time. Most importantly though, the witch's action is not comparable with prayer. Once again it was occult black magic, which should absolutely not be compared with prayer under any circumstances.

It's not necessary to ask other Christians to pray for you, but it is a good thing to do so. Just as this action builds the community of believers in one time, so also contemplation and prayer regarding the saints reinforces the bond of shared faith in Christ through time.
