Germany declared war on America so from Patton's perspective they had to go down but he regretted that we had to destroy the Germans instead of allying with them against the communists.
The film itself covers this. Patton is stationed in Germany after their defeat and the press are asking him questions. He expresses his desire to mobilize the Germans against the USSR, then a reporter chimes in and says "After all general didn't the Germans join the Nazi party pretty much like Americans joined the Democrats or Republicans." Patton offhandedly replies "Yes, that's about it." at which point the press runs a big headline saying "Patton compares Republicans and Democrats to Nazi Party".
>was murdered for it.His death was suspicious. He was antagonizing a war with the Soviets and there are a lot of people that would want him silenced for that. He died in a car crash which was ruled an accident but the driver had some possible although unproven connections to the communist party.
TLDR: Patton is my favorite film, so I'll just take the opportunity to once again recommend watching it. Its a great movie and George C. Scott is incredible in it. He won the best actor Oscar for it but turned it down after calling the Oscars "a glorified meat show".
