The French have historically been the greatest European military force, and thus on the whole are the greatest human military force in all history, on average.
The brief excellence of the Prussians eclipsed them, but with the abolition of Prussia after the second war it may yet be possible for the French to regain their former honor. Even if they don't, their old excellence deserves recognition.
