The first mention of the city of Gdańsk was in 999, when St. Adalbert of Prague baptized the city. It was mentioned again in 1148 in a Papal Bull. If you know anything about Central European history of the time, you know that the entire area was Polish at the time.
It wasn't until hundreds of years later that the city became split off from Poland into a separate Slavic country, and it wasn't until the 14th century that the city came under German (Teutonic Order) control. The city stayed under the control of the Teutonic Order for about 150 years and then Poland reconquered it. It then stayed Polish for hundreds of years, until Poland lost its independence and was partitioned by Prussia, Austria, and Russia.
