I tried getting permission from the county last year to have my house built. All traditionally built, I was going to have a flagstone foundation built by a mason, timber framing, diagonal tongue and groove sheathing, wooden clapboards, slate roof, lath-and-plaster interior walls, all heated with nothing but wood. The county said that tongue and groove sheathing, flagstone foundations, etc. weren't up to local code. Guy at the permit office basically told me that if I wanted a house like that I would just have to build it "the normal way" and then just have a facade to make it look like it had real craftsmanship put into it. Total fucking joke. I hate this state.
