when you say "j" you mean the germanic/latin 'j' right? like in johan
i guess it's related to the fact that the R sound, as different as it is from j,is still a sonorous letter. idk how to explain it since google doesn't seem to bring up relevant results, but in bulgarian we don't just have vowels and consonants, we classify some letters as sonorous. r, j/y, l, n, m if i remember right.
well of course, some dialects can get wild but i don't use them as a reference point. i've heard people from this part of the country tell me they have an easier time understanding serbs than people from tran. i can't relate since serb talk is very drastically different from my own dialect (the people here have a closer pronunciation to serbian) and i've never met anyone from tran
but to bring it back to my surprise at this difference in pronunciation, in general, if i see a serbian text, i'm farily sure i can pronounce it right. there's minor differences like when we say a word like "grad", the d will transform into a "t", because it's at the end of the word, while in serbian that won't happen. but that's pretty much it.
