It's one of the real reasons why Germany acts the way it does in the present day, its population was afflicted by a collective anguish so painful to bear that it literally molded the future generations in such a way as to completely fuck up the German psyche, breaking apart any resemblance of a national mythos that they once had. Add in the divide brought in by the Soviets between the West and the East, and you have in front of your eyes a broken nation that will never be able to regain its original composure in terms of pride, dignity, culture and traditions. Future historians will look back at the ww2 period and point out towards Germany when they will want to explain to their students how an unbelievable strong nation can be defeated for eternity.

and much, much more. If you honestly want to read about the subject, there's plenty of source material out there, both from the past and the present. Only the Russians still argue to this day that the Soviet soldiers didn't rape any women.
