That both chinese and the soviet union are heavily flawed and that secret agencies like the KGB kept everything secret, with the threat of being sent to a gulag or simply killed. Hell, you were under trial back then in communist countries when you couldn't attend certain parades. You were deemed a traitor to the cause. To this day the most ruthless regime in china and north korea kill millions of people solely for their opinion. That was the exact same reality that was going on in the soviet union.
