Brushing daily can prevent it from looking ridiculous. They also make oils and waxes although i have never actually tried them
I didnt really like mine at first but my wife really does as long as i take care of it. It looked weird to me the first few weeks. Mine is blonde and red and white but after about an inch of growth and actually brushing it once a day it is ok.
Would look like OPs pic if just let grown wild. About ready to start trimming it
