The impact of flouride in municipal water on dental health was huge. It's not simple vanity to have good teeth, poor dental care used to kill a lot of people (the amount of people who die from abcessed cavities in the US is still not insignificant). If we stopped doing it today, the impact would probably be relatively minor, but that's only because our dental care has improved by such leaps and bounds in the last century. We have in fact reduced the amount of flouride we put in drinking water in recent decades, because we are reliably getting a lot more flouride from our toothpastes and mouthwashes and dentists, along with more regular and superior dentist care.
