I was on board with Megadeth until Risk. Bought every album at release except KimB. Risk made it seem like they were going the Load route, so I never kept up after that until a few years back when I decided to try some new stuff. Have to say, United Abominations was a pleasant surprise.

How? It was pretty lackluster overall. Kick the Chair, Blackmail the Universe, and Back in the Day are the only tracks that really stand out, and I bought that album the day it came out.
As I stated int he previous thread, Risk, TWNAH, and TSHF represents the least interesting point in Megadeth's career.

Unironically both have quality traits that make their respective music periods stand out. Sure, I'll always have a softer spot for the old stuff, KIMB is the all time personal favourite, but at the same time, coning back to the newer stuff after a couple years of listening to other music, Dave is one of the few metal artists with such raw creative power that he kept pumping out quality material even in this decade.
That and always surrounding himself with technically better players to elevate the band's sound.
Yes, Megadeth is pretty much my favorite band.

I think Megadeth sounded perfect on that album. I guess I like that sort of production. Never listened tot he remaster because the toher remasters I do have sound like shit compared to their originals (Countdown and Youthanasia). The Killings My Business remasters were good though. Both of the remasters sound a zillion times better than that low end mess of a mix on the original.

There are some clunkers on the early stuff but when he hit it best of the genre. When he cleaned up and tried to get respect there were whole albums of clunkers (Cryptic Writings, anyone?) but now he's gone back to a few clunkers and a few great songs every album.

That said, Old Dave is better than new Dave and Old and New Dave is better than any of the other Big Four Bands and Pantera too.

I liked Metallica some back in the day, and still have the first 5, but holy fuck their music is pretty boring. Lars gave Dave shit for "not taking risks" with his music, but he was always way more creative. Megadeth's best has a lot of great technical shit going on, layers of it. I think that's a lot of why SFSGSW doesn't do it for me, there's not much candy in it. It's like they had some good ideas and then they just half-assed the lot.
