I had a friend who wasn't allowed to graduate with the rest of his class because he hadn't paid the college back on some money he owed them (rent, or some emergency bailout money fund or something.) He only got his degree months later after he gave them the money.
At least, that's what he told me, and I believed him at the time. Thinking more about minor inconsistencies in it all, I'm about 30% certain that he failed his final exams, and has been straight up lying about having a degree.
