Rockets work by igniting highly flammable fuels in a specially-designed chamber so that as much pressure as possible is released on the chamber's walls as it escapes
This makes it so that the greatest amount of pressure is at the bottleneck that the combustion gases escape from and at the nozzle, which makes it so that the only place that force isn't exerted is behind the nozzle of the rocket, netting an average force which pushes the chamber (and thereby the rocket) forwards.
