It's not obsession, it's relief that at least they can retreat to an imaginary space where the world isn't so fucked up.
When the imaginary character is more invested in you (or the anime creation team is) than real life women, I don't think the broken men the system is producing are really the problem anymore.
It's not really about the sexual imagery either, as several animes nowhere near hentai are very popular, it's the myth that a pure of heart girl exists and would express a lot of honorable, loyal, and actual work ethic characteristics that are inherent in Japanese society. It's the myth that a hero can exist and be lauded instead of undermined and destroyed.
They're soap operas for men, whereas women had soap operas for years where all the guys were their ideal and no one gave them shit because they're women.
Men are given shit now over this because society needs men to function, and since they're checking out they're handing out more lashes to different factions of the left that are trying to discard them: fags, trannies, dykes, democrats, etc.
