But more of how "paying taxes" wasn't even having money taken but instead literally just your possessions, your harvests, dudes just came up and took some.
Then manorialism happened where that didn't happen anymore and instead you just worked land designated as not being for you but being for lord. So your "taxes" were the free labor on the lords land.
