Some people may tell you otherwise these days for the sake of being contrarian because it became immensely popular but most of them are lying, the people who were actually here and watching anime at that point watched it on the edge of their seat with a big shit eating grin and tears running down their face when it was new.
Hunter X Hunter is another you'll probably be able to enjoy, on the whole it's a pretty typical Shonen in terms of story and characters archetypes but it's an exceptional example of it's kind. There are two series, one from 1999, and another from 2011, either one is good but the second covers more of the source material, runs longer, and is going to have a new season eventually.
