I think as more money gets invested in agriculture, and particularly modern technologies that allow more consistent crop yields (i.e. less waste) cost-to-consumer cost of food gets cheaper so caloric intake gets higher
Also i'm pretty sure most processed food, (which is attractive because less prep-time) probably contains flavour enhancing chemicals that artificially induces appetite.
