Gasmask General

Ordered an overpriced Drager Xplorer-6500 mask with P3 filter.

Friend is saying to get the way cheaper Polish MP5 mask. Though I'm a bit skeptic, this model being from the 90's, doesn't have the same standards as a Drager I reckon?

Can still cancel my order...

3 weeks ago I pondered buying masks but really didnt have the cash. Now they're completely sold out everywhere. This sucks.

The mask itself literally doesn't matter.All that matters is that it makes an airtight seal around your face and that it accepts 40mm nato filters.So the mp5 is fine.

The MP5 masks work really well actually, they're cheap because it's military surplus. A mask never "expires" per say, if properly stored and kept out of sunlight a gas mask from the late 60's would still work with the proper filter.
I got a GP-5 from 1987 and it works fine with the industrial filter i have.

In a city, use what people use and is more available. Drager and 3m masks are incompatible with NATO size filters, yet these two are more common and accessible for the general public

With 3m filters, prioritize that they have as many particle (white) layers as possible, as the rest of the layers do nothing to stop corona (according to CURRENT) info.

get it op. As someone who used the swedish military gas mask in conscription(widely regarded to be the most comfortable mask in the world) I bought the french version of the MP5 and I have no complaints

It is a little tricky to adjust for your head but it passes the seal test and that is really all you need. try and get a couple extra p3 filters for the money you save

Rubber can dry rot leaving holes in the seal due to shitty fitment. It's safest to use shit made 80s plus, but if you're desperate something older can work.

Already have respirators, True HEPA material should arrive today. Guide coming along nicely, should also let you re-purpose disposable masks into filters to drastically increase durability.
Has been tested and mended to be 100% airtight, don't mind the looks.

N95 mask have minimum of 95% protection while P3 filters(known as P100s in Murrica) have 99.97% protec

Don't waste your money on those throwaway paper masks. Get yourself a respirator full face preferably if you can. And pick up multiple packs of filters of N95 or higher. A lot of people think only those blue paper mask can save you but in reality there shit and only help catching what you have. Think of it like having a napkin in front of your face.

Still a bit confused about filters
I plan to wear the mask when out shopping, so for about 2 hours I imagine.
Do these filters last a few years regardless of usage?

True, but that's for .3 micron particles. Effectiveness could be higher as droplets are bigger and liquid. Seal is a bigger issue

The part that filters P part.
The P or Particulate section is all you really need for corona atm, since it hasn't gone full airborne yet. The Particulate secting can be used until you can no longer breathe through the filter (until it gets clogged by dust and other debris) so potentially years of usage.

It all varies on how often you go out wearing them. I have my mask on for over 8 hours a day while I'm at work. My coworkers thought I looked stupid and it was a dumb idea... Until one of them started coughing up of long now everyone's panicking but me.

P3's or N95s? depends on the filter, but generally speaking they take quite a long time to clog up. Disposable masks are exposed to your breath and gunk up over time, making them unhealthy to use, clogging comes later on.
If we are talking about filters with attachments they should last for a decent time, considering respirators and gas masks have an inbuilt valve system that separates your inhalation from your exhalation. This shields the material from your lung juices.

You'd have to go to the manufacturer's website, but small addon particulate filters last weeks if I remember correctly, on the other end of the spectrum pancake particulate filters last 6 months or so.

Thoughts on Half-mask respirators?

I have a few 3m half-masks with P100 filters. From what i've read thus far, it seems its honestly overkill.

They're good, if you've already shopped around you know how hard it is to find comfortable goggles to go with them.
Swimming goggles are nice not so much because of the suction but the fact these fit above the nose bit.
Make sure to test for leaks.
