My apartment complex has half a dozen bars, two bakeries, two hair salons, dentist, bank, three grocery stores, etc. Plus it cuts down on commute time as you likely live closer to where you work.
Houses are better for everything else. It's why many people here buy a weekend house in the countryside where they go Friday afternoon to Monday morning
