I'm a high school wrestler.
I was only average for my sport, I made it to state only my senior year and lost in the first round.
But that means I'm better than 99% of the guys walking around. A much bigger guy at the bar took a swing in me and I ducked inside, did a one leg takedown, and proceeded to punch him in the face until our friends pulled us apart.
Since he started it, he got kicked out and my friends bought me drinks.

look up some tutorials for basic boxing/ muy thai/ and kickboxing.

practice shadow boxing and imagine your opponent in front of you.

If you've never been in a fight you are in for an awakening. You should watch fights on the internet and learn as much as possible.

remember fighting should be your last option. carry pepper spray, a gun, and a knife.

when using a knife it's basically the same thing as throwing a right hook but with the tip of the knife at the end point instead of your fist.

Yes, required for my career(Law Enforcement). Ground fighting and Grappling are the important elements to me. An elbow(if an opening is there) to the throat/orbital bones works much easier though.

When it comes to striking you are absolutely right for the most part. When it comes to grappling this is not true at all. When I first started wrestling I was a noob in 215 weight class. The coaches son was way more experienced but was a manlet. He would woop my ass up and down and it took me a good while to overcome that experience gap.

But going deep into martial arts isn't worth it for most, unless you really enjoy it. Stay out of bad neighborhoods and sketchy bars, and you'll avoid most trouble. For me, I train mostly because it's very fun.
