A lot of them are really weak and afraid of other people, and because of that they're nice to them because they fear conflict. However, this is not them actually being nice, this is them being nice out of fear. They secretly wish to be powerful and completely self-interested, because they are hateful beings at heart. That's why they're so attracted to things like this, where they're told the secret is to stop being nice, because that's what's holding them back. If only they could be more self-interested (ignore the fact that they already are, and only still fail to make something of themselves because they're lazy, stupid, or cowardly), then they'd really take the world by the horns. They think the secret is to be self-interested, and they think this because it's the easiest thing to accept since they already are self-interested.
A lot of the other stuff is really, really fucking generic self-help shit. Like wow if something bad happens think about why it happened and how to avoid it in the future, did you really need to be told that?
