Generational loss

Hello fags. I was pondering today and I wondered if there was a certain generational gap that suddenly forgot or neglected our heritage. And I'm not talking about racial or nationality stuff, but about actual heritage, more like linage. I feel like my parents can't really recall much about their grandgrandparents. They do know some things, but it has not been recorded as detailed as I would have liked. Is this an intrinsic thing of oral tradition, or did we got this short-term memory due to globalization and media, etcetera?
I keep thinking about it, and I can't help but guess that, around 150 years ago, they did have more free time to discuss and record, even if just orally, some of the family's history.
